Volunteer Examination (VE) Session
What you will need
     
1.   Bring a legal photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.), or
2.   If no photo ID is available, bring two forms of identification:
    a. non-photo ID/driver's license (some states still have them)
    b. birth certificate (must have the appropriate seal)
    c. social security card
    d. library card
     
3.   Students / minors may bring any of the above items and/or a school ID, minor's work permit, report card, or a legal guardian may present a photo ID.
     
4.   Have available your FCC issued Federal Registration Number (FRN). All applicant submissions to the FCC must include a unique identifying number. You may register with the FCC before exam day to obtain your FRN. For instructions on how to register your SSN with the FCC and receive a FRN, visit the FCC's CORES registration page.

    NOTE: WCARS-VE requires that an applicant present a valid FRN when completing the required form WCARS-VE 605, per FCC requirements. This is NOT the same form as the FCC-605 required for CORES Registration.
     
5.   If already licensed, bring a photocopy of your current Amateur Radio license or a reference copy printed out from the FCC website, and/or the original(s) or photocopy(s) of any Certificates of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE) you may hold from previous exam sessions.
     
6.   If you want to use a calculator, any used must have the memory erased and formulas cleared just prior to the exam. You may not bring any written notes or calculations into the exam session. Slide rules and logarithmic tables are acceptable, as long as they're free of notes and formulas. Cellphones must be silenced or turned off during the exam session and the phones' calculator function may not be used. Androids, iPhones, iPads, Smartphones, Blackberry devices and all similar electronic devices with a calculator capability, may NOT be used.
     
7.   Writing instruments and any required exam material will be provided by the examining VE Team. NEVER write in the test booklet. The back side of the test score sheet may be used to make written calculations.
     
8.   Bring a check, a money order or cash to cover the exam session fee(s). Rates are listed on the Fees and Filing page.
